The Challenges
The challenges incorporate engineering, science, electronics, mathematics and problem solving. They are all designed to be rewarding and visually stunning. The challenge involve the use of life sized props and equipment.
Reading comprehension and team work will help your team succeed.
The following are examples of the types of challenges you may experience. You won't find out the actual challenges until the night of your event.
Crane
Construct a crane at least 1.8m tall. Motorise the crane to lift a 1kg weight and lower it at a different location.
Motorised Curtains
Curtains are mounted to a frame.
The curtains are motorised so that when it is dark, the curtains automatically close.
Apple Picking
Construct a contraption that can pick apples off a tree. Time how many apples you can pick in a minute. Build scales to weigh the apples, and calculate how much you would earn in an hour.
Measuring Device
A wheel is mounted to a frame, with a counter that counts up every time the wheel goes round. Use this contraption to measure the size of the hall.
Conveyor Belt
Construct a motorised conveyor belt.
Use a laser and counter to count the bananas as they travel along the belt.
Calculate how many bananas will pass per hour.
Pac-Man
"Pixles" are mounted to a vehicle and shaped like Pac-Man. Pac-Man's jaw opens and shuts as the vehicle moves.
A laser and counter count the Pac Dots.
Wind Turbine
Construct a wind turbine. Optimise its strength by adjusting the size, shape and angle of the blades.
Measure the power by using the turbine to lift a weight.
Solar Power Station
A solar panel is mounted on a frame.
The angle of the solar panel is controlled by a motor and a gearbox so that it slowly tracks the sun as it moves across the sky.
Rat Wheel
Construct a giant rat wheel.
Use this to generate electricity. Use the electricity to turn a light on and deliver cheese to the rat.
Fire Engine
A ladder is mounted on a vehicle. A pulley and reel system raise and lower the ladder.
The fire engine has flashing lights and a siren.
Pimp my Toilet
Build a toilet with sensors that will detect when you have sat on the toilet, and when you have stood up. Automatically close the lid, release the water and spray the air freshener.
Mars Rover
Construct a vehicle that will automatically turn to avoid obstacles.
